Module 1: Attachment & Trauma 101

In this module, we will define attachment, developmental trauma, and collective trauma, while exploring their impact on child welfare. Learn how secure and insecure attachments affect child safety, permanency, and well-being, and how to implement strategies to support children and families experiencing trauma and grief. Understand how to identify warning signs of trauma and recognize how your own history with attachment and trauma may influence their practice.

Module 2: Strategies for Prevention, Placement, and Permanency

Participants are guided in utilizing the therapeutic parenting cycle to support parents and implement key questions to prevent unnecessary out-of-home placements. We cover strategies to: 1) reduce trauma during investigations and removals, 2) use child and family visits in trauma-responsive ways, 3) support caregivers for placement stability, and 4) ensure trauma-responsive transitions for children moving from placement to permanency.

Module 3: Moving from Trauma-Informed to Trauma-Responsive for Supervisors and Leaders

In Module 3, we differentiate between trauma-informed and trauma-responsive child welfare systems and outline ways leaders can guide this transition. It will address how to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion, the importance of reflective supervision, and recognize signs of employee burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Participants will also learn strategies to support child welfare workers experiencing secondary traumatic stress.
